This month we will be discussing ‘Africa 39″ edited by Ellah Wakatama Allfrey
Africa39: New Writing from Africa South of the Sahara — a collection of short stories, excerpts from novels and several unpublished work-in-progress pieces — attempts to showcase this group of diverse writers from 16 nations across the continent with Kenya and Nigeria producing the most work.
Some of the writers revisit familiar themes of colonialism and resistance, and the neocolonial relationships between African countries and the West. But they do so with refreshing twists and turns.
Eleven of the stories have been culled from novels in progress. They are a promise of 11 excellent novels coming our way soon. In this way, the anthology as a whole is a preview of excellent writing yet to come.
London edition of the African Reading Group (ARG!) is there to help readers keep up with the explosion of literature coming out of Africa and its diaspora. We are a ‘new voice’ reading group, focusing on short story collections, novels and some critical or non-fiction. From time to time we may go back to a classic of African literature — but the emphasis is on the new.
The books will be available at meetings to buy from Book and Kitchen. During our holiday times or if you are unable to purchase the books in advance – you can also purchase through Paypal. For ARG members we offer a reduced shipping and handling fee of £0.75 only. Find out more.
