Caroline Binch is an award-winning children’s author and illustrator, highly commended by the Library Association Kate Greenaway Medal three times, winner of the Smarties Prize and twice short listed for the Sheffield Children’s Book Prize.

Her work is immediately recognisable world wide – especially through her illustrations for the bestselling Amazing Grace and several other Grace stories by Mary Hoffman.

caroline binch illustration 2After interesting years of illustrating books and magazines, a year off backpacking, sketching and photographing in South and Central America and the Caribbean, Caroline became sought after for her multicultural work.

Photography has long been a passion of Caroline’s and is integral to the picture books as she works from the images taken of friends and people she meets, persuaded to play out the story. This research has entailed travelling to African markets, entering a crocodile pit, an Irish tower block estate, Caribbean beach and Appleby Gipsy Horse Fair amongst other ‘exotic’ locations.

Photos are also the basis for privately commissioned portraits of children, adults and pets; the work executed in a variety of mediums such as pencils, water-colours or oils.

About Caroline Binch

caroline binch 1Caroline grew up in Old Trafford, Manchester and got a diploma for graphic design from Salford Technical College. She felt restricted by graphics and left the city for Cornwall with a horse and dog, spending two years in remote countryside drawing and painting while supporting herself with a multitude of jobs.

With a portfolio full of artwork Caroline eventually became established with the London agency Artist Partners – based in Ham Yard, Soho – where she shared studio space with fellow budding illustrators Brian Froud, Chris Foss and Alan Lee.
